Class #4: Demystifying “Show, Don’t Tell”: Tools to Transform Showing to Telling (and When Not To) – Sharon Skinner
Thursday, March 19th 6:30pm-9:00pm
$40 class alone/ $31.25 if taken as a set
“Show, Don’t Tell” is an oft-repeated mantra in writing. We hear it over and over, but what we are really trying to get at is using imagery to evoke emotional engagement and to allow the reader to experience the story through descriptive words and phrases. Yet, overusing description and imagery and showing too much detail can tax the reader’s patience. This workshop will explore various methods and tools for Showing while putting Telling into its proper place and includes a series of hands-on exercises that will provide key ways to strengthen your writing and bring your stories and characters to life.
Sharon Skinner holds a B.A. In English, an M.A. in Creative Writing and a Poetic License. She has worked as a landscaper, a cashier, a maid, a waitress, a communications specialist, a videographer, a technical writer, a project management consultant and a biomedical field service engineer and served aboard the USS Jason as one of the first women assigned to a US Navy ship.
Her poetry and fiction have been published in myriad local, national and international publications. Sharon is an active member of SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and serves as the Regional Advisor for SCBWI AZ.
